Creative Canvas Tour: Atlanta
"Art is not what you see, but what you make others see."
His hand was busy filling in the ebbs and flows of her hefty brown afro. It had been a long time since I had seen a visual artist creating in the moment. The blaring sounds of old school 90s hip hop meshed with the voices of people milling around laughing and occasionally staring at his work were not a distraction (unless he wanted it to be) for the young artist. When I came upon his table I saw a piece with two of the most memorable video game characters...well for me...because they looked cool...Subzero and Scorpion form the legend of all legendary 90's video games Mortal Kombat. Of course I found it quite dope. I guess the facial expressions of my sisters and I gave it away, so he stopped molding the afro and looked at us..."Y'all like that one?" "Yeah!" "Yeah, my mama don't like it." His mom walks over and starts to take her seat. She is collecting money for a raffle to give away one of his works. "See mama, they like it! I told you." His mother simply replies "Yeah ok ok." Capturing the moment is @b3autiful_soulz.
"Oh my God, that girl looks just like me" My sister said. And sure enough on the other side of the room I could see a replica of my baby sister. The skin tone, the fluffy body, the 90s street style wear, the big natural hair. Above it on a wall was my other sister, a dancer in the attitude position, an extended leg raised behind the body and bent at the knee, Her back arched and all of the bones following suit. Then there was the photo of us three, the chocolate one, the vanilla one, and the peanut butter one. How did she know us? Another painting of a heart, each valve with a scripture intricately placed inside. This heart represented our mom. How did this one woman capture every one of us? Capturing you and yours is @amytoday.
If you grew up in the 90s and had cable or you had a friend who had cable you were watching Nickelodeon. And on Nickelodeon were sucked into a world of talking babies with very distinct personalities and fears of a fake dinosaur. Their wild adventures and way of seeing the world kept you glued. The meanest and baddest of them was Angelica...who fawned over her Cynthia doll. We came upon Cynthia after many years and learned what had become of her. Capturing your childhood is @yourfemaleartistMany can draw and paint and put art on a canvas. A true artist will include you in their process or their final creation. I was impressed with every artist that night and I hope you'll not only check out their work but purchase it as well. Follow the @cr8can for a tour near you.
