Guilty Pleasure: "Cabs are Here!"

guilt·y pleas·ure
noun
  1. something, such as a movie, television program, or piece of music, that one enjoys despite feeling that it is not generally held in high regard.

Six months out of undergraduate school I was already missing the fun of my very dynamic college life. I was by no means a partier, but I did go out, hang out, explore, and have four of the best years of my life. I had so much fun learning about the person I wanted to be. I didn't start living the "real" me until I went to Korea years later, but I had a good time finding myself.

Like any other college kid, I loved the club. I could-  still can- dance for hours in a nightclub if the DJ was playing the right songs. I grew up in a house with parents who lived the disco life and I remember Saturday mornings cleaning the house with mom putting on Donna Summer records (on a record player, yes!). So, I naturally gravitated toward dance music. In college, EDM was the business. A Pitbull, Flo-Rida, Rihanna, or Lil' Wayne song over a  sickening EDM or House beat transported me to a Paris nightclub filled with people who had no rhythm, but popped, locked, and gyrated like they were Michael Jackson or Shakira. rank In 2009, I was not ready to give up that club/party life. Fortunately for me in graduate school, I met some cool "shore-like" people and our time in Peru and Brazil mimicked the fun of the Jersey Shore...I miss my mini wolf pack lol.

The Jersey Shore brought the party to my house every week and I was immediately hooked. In my life at the time, I was taking on a a very intense project, so I needed the Jersey Shore as a release. While everyone was hating on the gym, tan, and laundry bunch; the excessive drinking, the falling down drunk and the hooking up I found joy and laughter. Snooki, Mike "The Situation", JWow, Vinny, Pauly D, Ronnie, Sam, and Deena...oh and Angelina (*rolls eyes) were highlights of my life every week. I was fist pumping for no reason and I adopted Pauly D's ridiculous quotes "Cabs Are Here" "Yeah Buddy" "Awww Yeah, Champagne Yeah". One of my favorite moments is when Mike "The Situation" called Angelina a "Dirty little hamster"!! I still die every time. I loved to hate "The Situation" because he was a jerk, but it worked. I lived for JWow's tough girl demeanor. I wanted Snooki to be my friend because even though she was the most reckless of the group, that girl always had your back. And of course Pauly D and Vinny brought the fun, the party!

I will agree that The Jersey Shore cast not a good representation of Italians and Italian-Americans. I don't think that was the goal of the show. Its represents the fun and crazy antics that go on at the Jersey Shore. It was innovative because we had never been exposed to that culture, that life. One of the things I liked most about  the show is that you don't have to think when you're watching it. It's liberating! We should all have a moment where we're not thinking and letting our freak flags fly. From the first episode in 2009 when they all pulled up to the shore house in old, used, beat-up cars to them leaving the shore house in 2012 with expensive Cadillacs and convertibles, I have been there living the come up with them.

Last night the cast reunited for Jersey Shore Family Vacation and...everyone is grown up and living like an adult (whatever that means). I felt like I grew up with them. And the minor issues they were going through at the Shore were minute compared to the "adult" issues they have now. They all have or are expecting kids, married, in serious relationships, and/or dealing with the law. However, the biggest change in the cast is Mike "The Situation". He is humble, sweet positive, endearing. I guess sobriety and the possibility of losing your freedom can really change you. Everyone is doing well and seemed to have left that "shore" life behind.

But after a first night out in Miami, we learn that things never change and they can still go hard after rounds of tequila shots! I loved it. Made me wanna put on some poom poom shorts and hit the club. What a great time! I'm excited about this season and all the fist pumping, tequila shots, peeing in the pool, and craziness that we expect from our-my-Jersey Shore friends. Here's to FUN FUN FUN! YEAH BUDDY!
